Health services research examines how people get access to health care practitioners and health services, how much care costs, and what happens to patients as a result of this care.
The health service research theme at the National Cancer Registry involves the initiation, and support of projects in the following areas:
- describing patterns of diagnosis and care of cancer patients in Ireland, and exploring and investigating factors associated with access to, or receipt of, care;
- investigating cancer patients experiences of care;
- quantifying the economic impact of cancer in Ireland, from the perspectives of the health services, patients and their families, and society as a whole;
- evaluating the service and support needs of cancer survivors and their family members;
- evaluating different models of cancer service provision;
- evaluating the effectiveness, and impact on participants, of cancer screening programmes and tests;
- developing and evaluating interventions (e.g., to enhance cancer screening, patient adherence to treatment);
- modelling the medical and economic consequences of cancer-related health technologies (such as screening tests).
