The National Cancer Registry Ireland (NCRI) is pleased to announce the successful implementation of the Fourth Edition of the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O-4).

ICD-O is the international standard used by cancer registries around the world to classify and record information about cancers, including where cancer develops in the body and the specific type of tumour involved. Keeping pace with updates to this system helps ensure cancer data remain accurate, consistent and comparable internationally.

With the implementation of ICD-O-4, NCRI becomes one of the first population-based cancer registries in the world to adopt this latest classification system. This important milestone supports the continued production of high-quality cancer data that underpin research, cancer control planning, healthcare policy and patient care.

The transition to ICD-O-4 represents a significant achievement and reflects a great deal of careful, detailed work behind the scenes. It required extensive planning, testing and collaboration across teams to ensure a smooth and successful implementation.
