CERVIVA (www.cerviva.ie) is a highly successful health service research consortium in the area of cervical screening and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. CERVIVA 2 aims to build on that success and conduct further research in cervical screening and, for the first time in Ireland, other cancers linked to HPV.

The CERVIVA 2- research programme, which has been funded by a Collaborative Applied Research Group award from the Health Research Board, includes four workpackages:

  • Workpackage 1: evaluation of strategies for triage of women with a HPV-positive primary screening test.
  • Workpackage 2: determine the optimal cervical screening strategy in the “HPV vaccination era” using mathematical and economic models.
  • Workpackage 3: evaluation of the novel screening tool, RAMAN spectroscopy, in women referred for colposcopy.
  • Workpackage 4: population-based study of the epidemiology of HPV infection in head and neck cancers in Ireland.

The National Cancer Registry is leading workpackages 2 and 4.
