Cancer is a leading cause of premature mortality in Ireland and internationally. As well as resulting in a loss to individuals (and their families) in terms of reduced life expectancy, this premature mortality represents a loss to society in the form of lost productivity.

This project is estimating the costs of lost productivity due to premature cancer-related mortality. The first phase has calculated these costs for all cancers combined, and for the ten most common cause of cancer death, in Ireland in 2009; this work was conducted under the auspices of the project on the Economic Impact of Cancer in Ireland . The second component of this work is projecting future lost productivity costs: this analysis is being undertaken as part of the project on Challenges in Cancer Survivorship.

The third phase of the project involves collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer to estimate lost productivity costs internationally.

Productivity costs provide an alternative perspective on the cancer burden on society and can be used to policy decisions in relation to cancer control.
