Congratulations to Dr Harry Comber former NCRI Director!!

Dr Harry Comber, founding director of the NCRI, was presented with a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Healthcare Awards 2018 held on October 17th. The event, now in its 17th year, recognises excellence and achievement in the Irish health system and celebrates individuals that have made a positive contribution to patient care. Dr Comber, had been Director of the NCRI from its inception in 1992 until 2016.

Dr Comber successfully led the transition from a small regional to nationwide Registry with over fifty employees throughout Ireland, providing an evidence-based voice to public discourse on cancer incidence, mortality and survival. His work involved promoting the use of cancer information to help improve health service planning and evaluation, and ultimately, better patient outcomes.

Dr Comber was integral in a wide range of research projects at the Registry and contributed to many Registry reports. He also co-authored over 90 cancer-related peer-reviewed scientific papers. In 2014, he was awarded Honorary Membership of the International Association of Cancer Registries in recognition of his service to the field of cancer registration.
