Dr Harry Comber retires as Director of the National Cancer Registry

Dr Comber, who has been Director of the National Cancer Registry since 1992, has left the Registry.

Dr Comber, who has been Director of the National Cancer Registry since 1992, officially retires from his role on 6th June, but today (23rd May) is his last day in the office. While at the Registry, his work involved promoting the use of cancer information to help improve health service planning and evaluation, and ultimately, better cancer patient outcomes. He was involved in a wide range of research projects at the Registry and contributed to many Registry reports. In addition, he represented the Registry at many important international cancer-related conferences. He co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed papers while Director, and a leather-bound volume of these was presented to him at his retirement party as a gift from the Registry’s staff.  Dr Comber successfully led the transition from a small Registry into a nationwide organisation with over fifty employees throughout Ireland, providing an evidence-based voice to public discourse on cancer incidence, mortality and survival today. Details of recent publications and papers that he has been involved in are available here. Dr Comber’s replacement as Director will be announced on this site in due course.
